Health Requirements for Diving

During the registration session for your course we will ask you to complete and sign a medical statement stating you are fit for diving. If you answer any questions on the medical statement with a YES, you are required to visit a doctor and obtain medical clearance for diving. In many cases we will not accept a statement signed by our local doctors here in Khao Lak, so please check out this link to assess if you need prior medical clearance before arriving in Khao Lak and, if necessary, print a copy for your own physician/specialist to sign. This statement should be dated within 6 months of your planned course.

Please note: You must have 40 logged dives to enrol in these courses and you will need to purchase the PADI Divemaster Crew Pak (our shop price - between B10,215 to B11,155, depending on language) prior to the start of your course. There is also a A$196 processing fee payable directly to PADI at the end of your course for your Divemaster application – this is a standard fee, in Australian dollars, and is the same price all over the Asia Pacific region. You will need to provide your credit card details on your Divemaster application form.

DivemasterThe PADI Divemaster course is the first step on the PADI dive professional ladder and you will practise and perfect your diving theory, knowledge and skills to Instructor level.

We think the basic course (with or without the liveaboard trip) might appeal to either those who have only a little time to spare but want to achieve a Divemaster rating, or else to recreational divers who wish to gain an instructor-level competence in diving skills and knowledge for their own enhancement. If it is your plan to work as a Divemaster in the future we recommend you choose the internship option, where you will have the time and receive the instruction to gain maximum knowledge and proficiency, including hands-on experience and constructive feedback on two liveaboard training trips.

The PADI Divemaster course – 4 weeks

This course covers all the theory and practical exercises necessary to certify you as a PADI Divemaster. You will receive theory lectures on all aspects of diving, refresh your rescue abilities, learn how to create emergency plans, participate in in-water workshops and fine-tune your diving skills, including organising a search and recovery project and a deep dive. Throughout the course there are scheduled times for both independent study days and unsupervised skills practice in our on-site swimming pool.

The main role of a Divemaster is to supervise groups of certified divers before, during and after a dive with an emphasis on safety and risk management at all times. You will receive training on how to draw underwater maps and how to give dive briefs, and will accompany your Instructor as they lead a group of certified divers at one of our local dive sites. Towards the end of your course you will lead your own group of certified divers, under the watchful supervision of your Instructor.

Another major role of a Divemaster is to assist Instructors in student training, so you will also participate in an Open Water course and learn how to present your skills to students in a clear and precise manner. Additionally you will assist an Instructor on one of our Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diver courses and will take part in a workshop on the Reactivate course, a refresher course for certified divers, which you will be able to conduct yourself when you are a fully certified Divemaster.

The PADI Divemaster course with one liveaboard training trip

This course includes everything stated above but also offers practical training on a liveaboard trip at the end of the course, as we offer you the opportunity to lead a group of divers on one of our 3-day or 4-day liveaboard trips under the supervision of your instructor who will also dive in your group. Practise how to prioritise safety at all times whilst ensuring that the dive is well managed and fun for all divers. This is the best way to get real, hands-on experience by leading dives in a variety of dive locations in the Similans and other islands in the Andaman Sea.

The Sea Dragon Internship PADI Divemaster course with two liveaboard trips

This is the most extensive training we offer. The internship course includes everything stated above but, as we have much more time, we can offer more training, more diving and, importantly, more supervised dive leading for you. You will also have the opportunity to assist in a second Open Water course with a different instructor so you can compare different teaching styles and techniques. As this course is an internship you will receive an introduction to our busy front office and then actively participate in all the varied activities of a PADI 5-Star Dive Center and get an inside, hands-on experience of how dive centers work, from which you will gain the practical knowledge necessary to help you find future employment - if that is your desire.

As supervising divers is such a large part of the Divemaster’s role – indeed it may be the sole role of one of your future jobs if you choose to work in the industry – we offer two opportunities to lead a group of divers on a 3-day or 4-day liveaboard trip. The first liveaboard trip will be scheduled about three-quarters of the way through the course and, after receiving constructive feedback from your Instructor, you will continue the course and still have plenty of time to practice and perfect all you have learned. At the end of the course you will go on a second liveaboard trip, leading a different group of divers on different dive sites, under Instructor supervision for the final time!

Once certified, you may independently conduct the PADI Discover Local Diving experience and Reactivate (Scuba Refresh) programme for certified divers and also, under Instructor supervision, assist in various parts of the PADI Diver Education Programme. Congratulations! You are now qualified to travel the world and find work as an underwater tour leader or, in other words, a Divemaster!
